How to Brush Your Teeth Correctly: A Step-by-Step Guide

Most of us brush on autopilot, but technique matters more than effort. Follow these five steps from our hygienists to clean every surface without damaging your gums.

Step 1: Choose the right brush

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Hard bristles can wear enamel and irritate gums.

Step 2: Angle the brush at 45 degrees

Point the bristles toward the gum line at a 45-degree angle so they clean both the tooth and the edge of the gum.

Step 3: Use gentle circular strokes

Brush in small circles rather than hard back-and-forth scrubbing. Cover the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of every tooth.

Step 4: Don’t forget your tongue

Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Step 5: Brush for two full minutes, twice a day

Time yourself — two minutes is longer than most people think. Want a professional clean? Book a hygiene visit and read more in our cavity prevention guide.
